JCube mall to close down on Aug 6 to make way for 40-storey residential development

Singapore’s JCube mall, located in Jurong East Central, is set to close its doors on August 6 to facilitate the construction of a 40-storey residential development. This new development, expected to be completed by 2027, will not only offer residential units but will also feature commercial spaces on its first and second floors.

CapitaLand Development has noted that the forthcoming residential complex aligns with the Singapore Government’s vision of introducing new housing, businesses, recreational facilities, and amenities to the Jurong Lake District. The redevelopment will strengthen the connectivity of the area and cater to future growth.

The transition is underway, and CapitaLand is collaborating closely with the mall’s tenants, ensuring a seamless transition of the premises.

The upcoming residential development will be directly connected to the Jurong East MRT interchange station, Westgate, and IMM Building via the covered elevated pedestrian network known as J-Walk. Jurong East interchange station presently serves the East-West and North-South lines, with plans to integrate the future Jurong Region Line, set to open in stages from 2027.

Additionally, the planned development will link to the upcoming Jurong East Integrated Transport Hub, which will incorporate facilities such as an air-conditioned bus interchange, a public library, a community club, a sports center, and various commercial spaces.

CapitaLand Development Singapore’s CEO, Mr. Tan Yew Chin, has indicated that the residential development is anticipated to be launched for sale during the second half of 2023.

The development in the Jurong Lake District is anticipated to evolve into Singapore’s largest business district beyond the central area. This initiative is set to generate approximately 100,000 fresh employment opportunities and establish 20,000 new residences between 2040 and 2050. These additions will supplement the existing one million residents residing in Singapore’s western region, according to CapitaLand.

JCube boasts Singapore’s sole Olympic-size ice-skating rink and serves as a training venue for national athletes representing the Singapore Ice Skating Association and the Singapore Ice Hockey Association. The only other ice rink is situated at Leisure Park Kallang.

Sport Singapore has shared that they are collaborating with the relevant national sports associations for ice sports to formulate plans for alternative facilities to fulfill the short- and long-term training requirements of athletes.

Recreational figure skater Willis Lau, aged 24, expressed disappointment at the impending closure of the ice rink. He emphasized the significance of the rink as a crucial practice location, particularly for competitive skaters like himself, who has frequented JCube for skating practice since 2017, training once or twice a week.

Mr. Willis Lau, a recreational figure skater and a fourth-year environmental studies student at the National University of Singapore, expressed his hope for a replacement ice rink to open soon after the closure of the JCube rink. While he is considering going abroad for a year, which would provide him with an opportunity to continue ice skating, he recognizes that this isn’t a feasible option for many others. He mentioned the possibility of using the ice rink at Kallang as an alternative, provided the ice conditions there meet his standards.

Mr. Edwin Lim, co-founder of PastaGo, a tenant at JCube, mentioned that they are exploring alternative locations in Jurong due to the area’s favorable demographics and lively food and beverage scene. However, he acknowledged that rentals in malls like Jurong Point, Jem, and Westgate might be higher.

PastaGo’s JCube outlet employees will be relocated to a new outlet at Hillion Mall in Bukit Panjang, which is set to open in March. Mr. Lim highlighted that when they negotiated their three-year lease with CapitaLand in February 2022, there was no indication that JCube would be closing down for a residential development.
